It’s common to see paintings so realistic they don’t look like paintings (which I never see the point of), but in this case it’s the opposite – this is a real photo that looks like a painting. Alexa Meade painted a model and submerged her in a pool of milk, taking photos as the paint ran. Stunning.

KOMBOH did this awesome Avengers poster…

…which Marvel made him take down (side note: if Marvel’s going to go around taking down design-y posters using their superheroes, they have a long, long road ahead of them). So in response KOMBOH changed the poster to this:

A bigger version here lets you read the names they came up with to replace the Marvel trademarks.

No, these aren’t posters. They’re scratch-to-win tickets, created by designer Brogan Averill and Running With Scissors for Instant Kiwi, designed to appeal to hipsters. As a designer, I’ve seen this look a hundred times before, but as scratchy tickets they’re refreshingly surprising.

To give you an idea of how different these are, this is what Instant Kiwi tickets normally look like.

“We know it is only an album cover with a white square on it but often in design it can be a long journey to get at something quite simple which works and that simplicity can work on many levels – often the most simple ideas can be the most radical.”

Jonathan Barnbrook – who I saw speak at We Can Create late last year and was really impressed by – explains the thinking behind David Bowie’s new record cover. I kinda love it.

Just discovered this: a popsicle truck that evangelizes solar power. I like how people waiting in line can read the (fairly astonishing) statistics on solar energy. And it’s all delivered in an appealing, retro-ish design. The colours, especially, are well chosen.

Nice in-depth look at the London olympics 2012 design. Brave, trend-setting work. Remarkable how many great agencies are involved – it all started with Wolff Olins’ logo, which led to a great typeface by Alias and the remarkable visual identity system rolled out by Futurebrand. I love how the stadium is based on the logo. That must be a first.

- Via Quipsologies, the new National Restaurant Association logo must be the ultimate in post-rationalisation. It features not one, but two swooshes, and the funniest video demonstrating how those swooshes can represent pretty much anything (including a diamond ring and the moon, of course). This is beyond satire.
